Among most groups of friends or within organizations there are usually one or two people who stand out as a IT nerds. These are the ones others would consult before buying electronics and seek their help installing them and getting them to work. We’ll call them, “my friend’s cousin Sam.”
Before the Geek Squad and the Genius Bar my friend’s cousin Sam was the go-to guy for what components and gadgets to buy and how to get electronics to do what they were supposed to do.
When we first started buying computers Sam would walk us through setting things up, understanding the software and getting the components to work. He would read the manuals. He’d be who we’d call when something went wrong. As more people became interested in personal computers everyone had a Sam to call.
Eventually some Sams were a little smarter, worked faster or cheaper than other Sams. Some Sams worked in electronic stores, some set up computers for businesses or schools and some went to college to better understand the inner workings of Information Technologies. They graduated from Sams to become IT Systems Specialists.
Sams did and still do help many people decide what electronics to buy and many times how to get them to work. But many people, and organizations quickly realized there comes a time when you need more than Sam. You need an IT Specialist. You need TenisiTech.
Sam Doesn’t Know What Sam Doesn’t Know – And Neither Do You!
Sam doesn’t know about the overall health of your IT environment. Sam has never worked in an enterprise before so he doesn’t know what it means to establish an IT foundation upon which everything else will grow. He doesn’t know about central management consoles for encryption, anti-virus, monitoring, backup and patching applications. Heck, he doesn’t even know which applications to use for all of these important basics.
Sam doesn’t understand that “free” is not always best – especially when it comes to standard software that’s used every day. He’s found a license key that works, but the implications for a company running unlicensed software are dangerous. Or, he’s standardized on a free software package that doesn’t come with any support and has feature limitations that the company will ultimately need.
Sam has never put together standard IT processes in cooperation with company management so when the company is ready to certify as HIPPA, SOX, PCI or you-name-it compliant, the job is bigger than it would have been otherwise. More importantly, without these standard processes he leaves ex-employee accounts active and bumbles about when new employees start.
Working with Sam has increased risk and decreased employee productivity.
